Townlands of Dromintee Parish

17th May 2020

This week all the classes are doing a project/task on Bailte Fearainn Pharóiste Dhroim an Tí - the townlands of Dromintee Parish.  Every class will use the map as a source for their project.  The map was created and produced by Mrs Teresa Fearon and shows minor placenames and historic monuments.  I hope Mrs Fearon's introduction and context inspires you to explore our heritage-rich area with your children. Ireland is unique in the world to have named townlands - over 64,000.  It is part of our heritage and our DNA.  I am a proud citizen of the townland of Dromintee, as was my grandmother and the previous generations of Babes.  My mother is from Aghadavoyle.  I think it's important that we all know where we're from, so I've asked all the teachers to set challenges for this week on exploration of the townlands theme.  We can compile everyone's experiences and have a book of everyone's project on Bailte Fearainn.  The adults may be interested in the P7 challenge which was published by the Ring of Gullion.  It is a fantastic resource.  You may also be interested in the family challenge - you can 'anonymously' submit a little snap shot either through photos or video of your location/ town-land and the children have to work with parents and family to decide where the townland is. You might offer clues too... like a 'through the key hole' approach. I hope you have fun with this.  I can't wait to see everyone's contributions.  After this Covid-19 pandemic has passed and we are reflecting on this time I hope that some children will remember finding out about their local area.
