End of the month Mathletics

31st Mar 2020

As you were aware March was the month for polishing up our Mental Maths skills.  As we haven't been in class for teachers to nominate a pupil improving at their mental maths we will celebrate our Mathletics achievements instead.

This month  5 pupils were awarded a Gold Certificate and 17 pupils received Silver certificates.  Remember you can print out your own certificate at home and why not send us a photograph for the school website.

Special congratulations  to our Gold awards:  Caitlin Carnegie, Matthew Geoghegan, Chantal Hekman, Matthew Mc Bennett and Paraic Mc Genity.

Perhaps you need a break from Mathletics for a week or two, maybe you could make Maths come to life in the real world!  We would love to see your own ideas for this challenge, send us your photos please.  Cast your mind back to all the wonderful guests speakers we had for Maths Week this year, maybe they will inspire you to use your Mathematical and scientific skills.

Here are a few ideas to get you started:  Already lots of pupils have demonstrated their wonderful baking skills with photographs of delicious cakes and bread etc.  Perhaps you might have a go at baking.

Play a board game with a family member, eg. snakes and ladders (learning numbers to 100) or play a countdown number game using a selection of random numbers to produce a target total.

The beautiful dry weather might encourage you to bring Maths to life in the outdoors.  Perhaps go a shape (KS1) or an angle (KS2) walk around your house, follow a treasure hunt using mathematical clues (times tables etc) Use chalk to draw your own little hopscotch (either using traditional hopscotch numbers or maybe make an odd/ even numbered hopscotch.. maybe even a teens or hundreds hopscotch to help with oral counting skills.  Make a map of your garden and use a compass or directional language to find something specific in it.  Race against a timer: how fast can you complete your daily mile challenge?

Take the dust of an old dart board if you have one and put your mental addition and subtraction skills to good use.

Design your own target game with facts and figures.

Looking forward to seeing your photos of your great initiatives to Make Maths fun in the real world!

Good luck,

Mrs Mc Ardle
