Dromintee PS staff visit Ring of Gullion townlands and landmarks
Teachers and assistants joined Una Walsh on a visit to the Early Christian site of Kilnasaggart Pillar Stone, Moyry Castle and finished at the Old Faughart Holy Well and graveyard. Along the way the staff learned of the richness of the landscape in which the school sits, geographically, historically and culturally. As we returned to the school and looked left to the Dhaaicklemore mountain in Carrickbroad . The inscription on Kilnasaggart Pillar Stone can be dated to around AD 700, making it the earliest cross-carved stone in Ireland. Moyry Castle was built in 1601 by Lord Mountjoy to overlook the Gap of the North in order to secure the area for the Crown. It was a three storey castle on a rocky hillock with spectacular views of the surrounding area. In Faughart graveyard there are ruins of a church said to be of ancient origin, reputed to have been built by St Brigid. We visited Edward Bruce’s grave who was crowned King of Ireland in Dundalk in 1316.
