P7 Slieve Gullion Hike!

16th Apr 2018

Primary 7 pupils took a trip to the top of Slieve Gullion on Wednesday. They reached the height of 573 metres and learned stories of the history of the mountain inside the burial cairn, which is the highest surviving passage grave in Ireland.

They heard about the volcanic activity which caused the ring dyke, from which The Ring of Gullion gets its name. The mountain is covered with conifer forests, heather and stone and the children were encouraged to look for evidence of life and animal species.

Unfortunately, the stunning views of the surrounding countryside were not enjoyed by the children on this trip as visibility was so poor. The heavy mist stayed with us throughout the day as is evidenced by the pictures of the children at the summit.

The children enjoyed learning the geology and mythology of Slieve Gullion before lunching on the slopes in their self-erected eating areas. They enjoyed the hot chocolate at the rest point on the way down.

If you look closely at the photographs we think you can see Fionn McCool and the Calleach Beara in the mist in the background!

Thank you to Colm and Philip Clarke for being such enthusiastic, informative and fun guides.

We shall always remember our special day on the mountain.
