Anti-Bullying Week Activities

16th Nov 2018

This week we celebrated Anti-Bullying Week in Dromintee Primary School. This year the theme explored was ‘Choose Respect.’  Once again, the Pastoral Care Team/Anti-Bullying Ambassadors were busy coordinating several events. This included judging a poster competition, going under cover looking for acts of kindness in the playground, participating in a yellow non-uniform day and an end of week assembly. We welcomed our new parent Governor Mr Damian McGenity, to our assembly and thank him for presenting our poster and kindness award winners with their certificates. Mr McGenity was impressed with the work of the Pastoral Care Team/Anti-Bullying Ambassadors and spoke to all pupils, about the importance of sharing any worries they have with school staff.

In class pupils explored the theme through PDMU lessons using a range of resources from the Northern Ireland Anti-Bullying Forum (NIABF), The Diana Awards and the Anti-Bullying Alliance. Interactive activities, circle time, role play, crosswords and word searches; helped pupils to discuss the meaning of the word respect and how we can display it to our friends in school and the wider community.

P4-7 pupils also participated in ‘Being an Upstander’ workshops with Mrs Fearon. Using resources created by the Diana Awards, pupils explored the importance of being an upstander if they witnessed bullying, rather than being a bystander. Mrs Fearon reinforced our school keeping safe messages, about talking to a safe adult if they have a worry or concern. P4-7 pupils also created their own upstander pledge.

Pupils participated enthusiastically throughout the week and all looked fantastic in their ‘Wear Yellow for Respect’ clothes. Thanks to the Pastoral Care Team/Anti-Bullying Ambassadors for their continued hard work, in making our school a happier and safer place for all to learn and play in.
